Hydrological low-flow characteristics of the River Elbe and its major tributaries

When the scenarios of the expected climate change in Central Europe will come true and temperatures will continue to rise, it is assumed that hydrological extreme events (i.e. flooding as well as droughts) will occur more often. Another potential consequence of clime change could be a decrease of precipitation in the hydrological summer half-year that may be caused by a shift of precipitation from summer to winter in conjunction with rising temperatures. Against this backdrop, the International Commission for the Protection of the River Elbe (ICPE) compiled the current hydrological low-flow characteristics of this river and supplemented them with analyses of trends and leaps in the time series of flow and precipitation.

The result of this effort is a description of the present-day streamflow regime on the basis of the selected time series 1961-2005.
